Discover the Transformative Power of Therapeutic Riding: Enhancing Physical, Cognitive, and Emotional Well-Being

Forms of therapeutic riding has a history of success that extends back to the 1940's in Europe, when a few therapists began to use the gentle motion and rhythmic movement of the horse to stimulate the muscles used in the typical human walk, unable to be replicated in any other therapy. They found that the motion alone relaxes muscles while simultaneously  stimulating the development and toning of the underlying muscle. This input produces physical changes in the rider and promotes postural improvements, increased strength, and better balance and coordination.

Outside of physical benefits, therapeutic riding has been shown to benefit those with cognitive, behavioral, or emotional disabilities as well. Riding has been proven to be highly motivational, enriching, and educational modality for riders to set aside their crutches, wheelchairs, and other disabilities while in the saddle.

The attraction of the horse and the opportunity to bond with this gentle giant also provides encouragement to riders with emotional or psychological challenges. When students realize that a real relationship exists between them and this large creature, Banbury Cross programming can nurture the development of life skills.

Growth and achievement in one area is likely to affect the growth in other areas. For example a student who gains core strength expends less energy on maintaining balance and can then work on giving clear verbal commands. Participants who are enrolled year round and maintain few absences experience the greatest results. Instructors are consistently evaluating participants needs and abilities to ensure that the riding experience is the most beneficial and yielding the best results through lesson plans and class structure.
